In the spring of 2025, Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a passionate admirer of Donald Trump’s economic decisions, announced the development of an Argentina citizenship program. All industry experts immediately began to weigh the prospects and possibilities of launching such a product. It should be noted that the Argentine passport gives the right to visa-free entry to many countries of the world, including Europe (Schengen zone). Argentina is also in the process of rebooting its relations with the United States – on July 29, 2025, an application was submitted to rejoin the US Visa Waiver Program. With an Argentine passport you can live in 9 countries of South America (Mercosur). So, the advantages of Argentine citizenship are obvious, but what are the conditions?
Argentina Citizenship by Investment: What is Known About the Procedure
The authorities have established the Agency for Citizenship by Investment Program as part of the Ministry of Economy. This unit will receive applications for Argentine citizenship and coordinate the inspections, based on the results of which it will prepare recommendations and send them to the National Directorate of Migration. Then, within 30 business days, a decision on the application will be made. Moreover, in case of refusal, such a decision will be reasoned.
Only 7 government agencies will be involved in the candidate checks, including the Ministry of National Security and the Financial Information Unit. And the Customs Collection and Control Agency must be technically prepared to assign individual tax numbers to successful candidates for Argentina citizenship by investment.
How to spend it?
The main questions – how much to invest and what options there will be for this – are still being developed. The expected minimum investment amount is $500,000 USD. However, the final decision on pricing policy and providing options for capital investment will be made by the Argentine Ministry of Economy.
When to start?
It is obvious that the current government of Argentina is really serious about the launch of the program and is interested in it. But it is unlikely that we can expect a quick launch, since preparing the entire state machine for such processing may take time.
Reputation issues
All citizenship programs of countries with visa-free agreements with the European Union are under pressure from European parliamentarians. Perhaps, given the experience of other countries, Argentina will introduce restrictions on the admission of candidates from certain countries to the citizenship program. Or they will introduce some simple requirements for staying in the country, so that there are no questions about how seriously they take the program and the selection of candidates. But so far, none of the public announcements on the launch of Argentina’s program have mentioned such details.
